Manufacturing consumes large amounts of resources but everyone should look for opportunities to reduce plastic where possible. We weren’t able to eliminate plastic from the game but we changed several parts of the game to reduce plastic.

We didn’t use shrink wrap for the outside of the product. Instead we have a paper wrap that goes around the box. The paper wrap was intended to be thrown away after opening the game for the first time but many customers continue to use it so the game doesn’t open when taking it to game night. This is an unexpected long term customer benefit.

The initial feedback from retailers has been positive but I am interested in seeing how this paper wrap performs on store shelves. My concern is that the paper wrap will become damaged or customers might think the game is secondhand. The reality is that most sales of Formosa Formosa will be direct sales from myself at conventions or shipped online. I still hope that it works for retail stores though.

This is a roll and write game but we chose to use reusable player boards instead of single use paper sheets. Environmentally there are positives and negatives but with reusable player boards. We also required a large writing area and the game plays better with the folding player board. The environmental negatives are the increased shipping weight and plastic dry erase markers will need to be replaced periodically. We believe that the positives far outweigh the negatives though.

We also had to specifically ask for wooden cubes instead of plastic. This wasn’t a big cost issue but wooden cubes won’t be perfectly uniform in size and the paint isn’t as durable as plastic.

Inside the box we replaced plastic storage bags with paper envelopes. Once again this wasn’t a cost issue but we had to specifically ask for these changes since the standard is to use plastic for everything.

I think we could have done more to reduce environmental impact of Formosa Formosa but these are important lessons learned that can be improved upon in future games we publish.
